Washing the Clutter Away

My laundry room is less than ideal. I don’t know why, but is seems that newer homes think of the laundry room as a secondary room. Rarely are they spacious with bright, sunny windows and plenty of storage. But I can dream, can’t I. My laundry room is a small pass through area on the way to the garage. No available floor space whatsoever. Romping through this room with armfuls of groceries is like circumventing an obstacle coarse. Only recently I tripped with an guitar, fell against the door, heard a “pop” and, you guessed it, punched a dime-sized hole in the wall. Lovely.

Because, as I said, there is no floor space, I had to think vertical. I purchased a trash bin and plastic bag dispenser from IKEA. The 2 of them together cost about $5. But, what a wonderful addition. I now have a place to dump the lint and things that come out of our pockets. I have a dispenser to hold the plastic bags that I use to line waste baskets and pick up puppy doodles in the back yard.

When we moved in, the house came with one shelf over the washer…that I couldn’t reach.  It was impractical.  So, I had my husband lower the shelf and install a second shelf closer to the ceiling.  Things I use all the time, like my laundry detergent, bleach, cleaning caddy, rags, etc. go on that shelf.  The higher shelf is for bulk cleaning and paper products.  There is a fold-away stepladder that I can use that I keep tucked next to the washer.

I found this folding ironing board at Ollie’s for around $10 and had a 15% off

coupon.  It has an iron holder and compartments for starch, pre-wash, and a

lint brush.  The door you see to the right of the ironing board is the living room.

Although, like I said before, a pass through laundry is less than ideal (probably designed by a man), it is workable as long as you use all of the vertical space.

Life in a binder…

My journey through my house starts with my planner.  This is a 5 x 8 binder that I got at Goodwill for $2.  The tabs that I put into it are:  calendar, cleaning, projects, shopping, websites, vacation, and Christmas.

On the calendar I list birthdays and anniversaries.  I don’t get too detailed since I have a wall calendar on the fridge.

The cleaning section has a check off list of chores for each of the four weeks of the month as well as a monthly chart with tasks that should be completed (most of the time that happens) on a monthly basis. I’ll go into more detail on a future post.

The projects section lists different craft, organizational projects, or home remodeling projects that we have going on as well as costs and ideas.

The shopping section is for drooling.  I love Ikea, and Baggalini, just to name a few.  I keep a running list of items I like or want along with the regular prices.  Then I shop around at Ebay.  I only get to Ikea a few times a year, so having a running list helps a lot.

The Website section is just that.  Websites, Youtube channels, and blogs that I follow.

The Vacation section is where I plan (and dream) vacation getaways for me and my hubby.  More vacation planning posts will follow as I plan this years escape.

The last section is Christmas.  One page contains a list of people that I send Christmas card to, as well as a check off for those who don’t send return cards.  It’s not a naughty  or nice list, but hey, stamps cost money and so I’m mostly going to send cards to those who reciprocate.  The next page is a list of people I buy presents for: hubby, kids, kid-in-laws, grandkids, parents, etc.   It can get pretty pricey…so, I buy throughout the year.  The best time to buy is within the first week AFTER Christmas.  Problem is, unless I write it down, I forget who I’ve bought for.
